Stargazing in the Port Austin area can be a memorable and enjoyable experience. Just remember to plan ahead, dress appropriately, and be prepared for a beautiful night under the stars. Our night sky is something that inspires us and we hope you have a clear night where you can enjoy it as well! The official Dark Sky Park is located in Port Crescent State Park (enter via day use park).

Port Crescent Dark Sky Preserve
One of six official Dark Sky Preserves in Michigan is located inside of Port Crescent State Park. Be sure to be mindful of other stargazers and avoid using bright lights when you visit.
Stargazing
Dark Sky Lodge & Tavern
Located just outside of the Port Crescent Dark Sky Park, Dark Sky Lodge provides its guests with a monocular and star guide for use in the park or in their equally dark back yard. They also have hosted guided stargazing events and plan to again in the future.
Grindstone Harbor
Grindstone is a fairly remote location with minimal residents & light pollution. If you wander back to the harbor area, you should have a dark sky filled with stars to enjoy.
Port Crescent Dark Sky Preserve
The official Dark Sky Park is located in the Day Use area of Port Crescent State Park. The rest of the park is closed during the late night hours, so please be respectful of the rules and the other stargazers.
Lighthouse County Park
While not an official dark sky area, Lighthouse County Park has that dark “edge of the world” feel at night. Check out the historic Pointe Aux Barques lighthouse underneath the starry night sky.
Useful Tips & Apps for Stargazing
It can take up to 40 min for your eyes to adjust to the darkness, avoid looking at any bright lights during that time. If you need a light, it is suggested to use a red light flashlight.
Make sure to bring an extra layer or blanket as it can be cooler at night.
To get your bearings, use a star map or star gazing app such as Night Sky, Sky Guide, or Star Chart.
If you have a telescope or binoculars, they can enhance your stargazing experience. However, even without equipment, you can still enjoy the beauty of the night sky in Port Austin.
